18.11.2014, Brussels. Discussion: “The Role of culture in the emergence and reconciliation of the conflict in Ukraine”


On the 18th November 2014, Dr. Olena Prystayko, Executive Director, Ukrainian Think Tanks Liaison Office in Brussels spoke at a discussion “Role of culture in the emergence and reconciliation of the conflict in Ukraine” organised by Vesalius College of Brussels Free University within the framework of European Peace and Security Studies Lecture Series.

Dr. Olga Burlyuk from Ghent University and Jerzy Pomianowski, Executive Director of the European Endowment for Democracy also spoke at the event.

Speakers discussed the role of culture in the emergence of the conflict in the East of Ukraine. Difficulties of a long term policy planning, including in the cultural area, was also discussed during the event. Factors that facilitated the development of the conflict were mentioned. All speakers agreed that Ukrainians can be united by the same goal and that local communities, civil society and youth have an important role to play in reconnecting Ukrainian society.
