25.11.2014, Brussels. Expert discussion “Ukraine and the European Energy Security: from cooperation to integration”

On the 25th November 2014, Ukrainian Think Tanks Liaison Office in Brussels in cooperation with the Konrad Adenauer Stiftung and with support of the Mission of Canada to the EU and European Commission organized an expert discussion “Ukraine and the European Energy Security: from cooperation to integration”.

Experts from Ukraine, Olena Pavlenko, President of DiXi Group, Svitlana Golikova, Director of TransEnergoConsulting and Natalia Andrusevych, Chairman of the Board, Resource & Analysis Center “Society and Environment”,  Johannes Baur, Support Group for Ukraine, European Commission and Hans Rhein, Desk for Ukraine, Belarus and Moldova, Directorate General for Energy, spoke during the discussion. The event attracted around 50 participants.

All speakers welcomed the coalition agreement in the new Parliament of Ukraine and expressed hope that the plans to reform the energy sector, clearly enshrined in this agreement, would be implemented. Experts gave a special attention to the question of modernisation of the gas transit system of Ukraine, summarized what has been done so far on this path and what remains to be done in the nearest future. During the event, attention was also drawn to the issue of environmental protection and the existing EU Directives which must be passed by the new Ukrainian authorities in the context of the European integration. Officials of the European Commission agreed on the need for legislative changes that would preclude abuse in the energy sector and introduce transparent rules in the market. They also stressed the important role of the civil society and independent media in this difficult process.
